3. For Brazil the result includes street, district, city and state; for the other countries, the locality and region of the code.

A US ZIP code is not a geographic area in the way most people assume — it is a delivery route. That is why ZIP boundaries do not align with city or county lines and can be oddly shaped.

The first digit covers a group of states, the next two narrow to a sectional centre facility, and the last two identify the delivery area served by that facility.

Some ZIP codes serve a single building with high mail volume, and others cover no residential area at all, existing only for post office boxes.

• A recently created code not yet reflected in the queried database.
• A code assigned exclusively to an organisation, which may not appear in public data.
• A typo — most five- or eight-digit combinations are not valid postal codes.
• A new development whose addressing has not been formalised.

The lookup uses a public addressing database. It reflects the official record but can lag very recent changes.

The result gives the address, never the occupant. No name, phone or personal data is attached — postal codes identify locations, not people.
